is the Professor of Flute at Florida State University. As a soloist/chamber musician, recording artist, and masterclass teacher she tours in Europe, USA, South America, and the Far East. Founder of SYRINX, an association for flute teachers in Austria. For 20 years she was a member of St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra in Switzerland and Professor at the Conservatory Feldkirch in Austria. Her teachers include A. Nicolet and G. Rumpel. Member of the Florida Flute Association board and of various National Flute Association committees, and Chair of the Myrna Brown Society.
studied viola with Roberto Diaz and Burton Fine. He was selected to perform at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute for three years, earned a BM in viola performance from the New England Conservatory, and also earned an MLIS from the Florida State University. He has performed with the Tallahassee Community Chorus, the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, and the Tallahassee Symphony. Brian works as a web developer for Florida Virtual Campus and sings bass in the St. John’s Episcopal Church choir.
Valerie Prebys Arsenault
has two favorite musical activities: teaching the violin and playing baroque music. She is the President and Music Director of the Tallahassee Bach Parley. As Visiting Assistant Professor at Florida State University she directs the Baroque Ensemble (on period instruments) and has taught violin and directed the Irish Ensemble. She is a member of the Tallahassee Symphony, a principal player and soloist with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, and has performed and recorded with the Apollo Ensemble (NY) and Apollo's Fire. She studied violin at the New England Conservatory (BM), violin pedagogy and baroque violin at the Indiana University School of Music (MM, Early Music), and earned her doctorate from the Florida State University College of Music. At the Bach Parley String Academy, Arsenault uses a synthesis of Suzuki and traditional pedagogy, tailored to suit the strengths and learning styles of each student. Her approach is positive and compassionate, but also demanding, and she enjoys helping her students find creative solutions to technical and musical challenges.
is Professor of Music and Chair of Humanities and Interdisciplinary Studies at Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, he earned his Doctorate in flute performance, a Master's in Historical Musicology and certificates in early music and world music at Florida State University, where he studied flute with Charles DeLaney, early music with Jeffery Kite-Powell and Karyl Louwenaar, and ethnic flute traditions with Dale Olsen and Ming Li. He also earned a Master of Music degree in flute performance at the University of Akron and a Bachelor of Music degree in jazz performance at Duquesne University.
began her professional studies in violin and viola at the University of Miami, studying with George Zazofsky and Victor Stern and with David Becker at the University of Wisconsin Madison. She has performed with groups as diverse as the Florida Philharmonic, Miami Chamber Orchestra, West Palm Beach Opera Company, Tallahassee Bach Parley, and the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. The breadth of her repertoire stretches from symphonic to chamber, opera to popular, and she has performed with artists as varied as Perlman and Sinatra. On period instruments, she has performed with the F.S.U. Baroque Ensemble, Baroque Southeast, the Apollo Ensemble, and is Principal Violist with the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra. She plays on a 1760 Locky Hill viola.
Charles E. Brewer
Charles E. Brewer is Professor of Musicology in the College of Music at Florida State University. His research interests concerning the music of the Seventeenth Century has focused on the instrumental compositions from Central and East Central Europe and has been conducted at archives throughout the region. The results of his research have been presented at scholarly conferences, in publications, in concerts, and on recordings by Tafelmusik, Hesperion XXI, and Acronym. His book, The Instrumental Music of Schmeltzer, Biber, Muffat and Their Contemporaries, was published in the spring of 2011. He is a long time member of the Tallahassee Bach Parley and serves on the Board of Directors. He plays the harpsichord, clavichord, and organ, and has performed with the Bach Parley. He helps choose innovative, engaging programs for the Parley’s concerts, arranging and engraving new music parts when necessary.
is a native of Seoul, South Korea, and she began to play the violin at the age of ten. She attended the Dankook University where she studied with Daesik Kang and received her Bachelor’s degree in Violin Performance. She moved to the United States in 2005 and earned her Master’s and Doctor’s degrees at the Florida State University where she studied with Karen Clarke and Corinne Stillwell. As a winner of American Fine Arts Festival, she played a solo performance at the Weill Recital hall at the Carnegie Hall in 2012. She has also given solo and chamber recitals at Jacksonville, Mariana, Tallahassee, Thomasville and Seoul in Korea. As a leading orchestral musician, she has served as an associate concertmaster for the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra, and guest assistant concertmaster for the Sinfonia Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra. Also, she is a player for the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, Valdosta Symphony Orchestra and Albany Symphony Orchestra. She has been awarded the prizes in numerous competitions such as the Korea Music Competition, the Chungbu Conservatory Competition, and the Music World Newspaper Company’s Competition in Korea.
acclaimed as "a fresh, steady lyric soprano" by the New York Times made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2001 singing music by Mozart and Schubert. Other New York City honors include a recital at Weill Recital Hall as a winner in the American Song Competition. Ms. Connors’s opera credits include Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro for the New York City Opera National Company's tour, as well as roles with Glimmerglass, Atlanta, Orlando, Opera Carolina, and Chautauqua Opera Companies. She has toured for Florida Grand Opera and Michigan Opera Theater and has sung with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the St. Paul and Cayuga Chamber Orchestras, the Phoenix, Pacific, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Chautauqua, Santa Fe, Richmond (IN), Tallahassee, and Szczecin (Poland) Symphony Orchestras, among others. She also has extensive oratorio and recital credits. In addition to her performing, Ms. Connors maintains a large private voice studio and is a frequent adjudicator for vocal competitions.
Rebekah Franklin is a musicologist and cellist, with research interests including eighteenth-century music, digital sound studies, festivals, music of Spanish and Moravian mission communities, and American music, with special interest in twenty-first century performance traditions of J. S. Bach’s music in Europe and the United States. Other interests include historical performance practices, theology, and cello pedagogy. She graduated summa cum laude from Wheaton College Conservatory of Music with a B.M. in Cello Performance in 2015, then from Florida State University with an M.M. in Historical Musicology in 2017, after which she pursued doctoral studies in musicology at FSU. She is currently the Social Media Editor for the American Bach Society, a production team member for ABS’s Tiny Bach Concerts initiative, and the incoming editor for Bach Notes. She is the Marketing and Engagement Coordinator for the Tallahassee Bach Parley, and co-host of their “Coffeehouse Conversations” series. Rebekah has also served as an Associate with FSU’s Program for Instructional Excellence. As both a modern and Baroque cellist, she is an active performer in the Gulf Coast area and a co-conductor of the Tallahassee Home School String Orchestra.
Timothy Hoekman, Professor of Vocal Coaching and Accompanying at Florida State University, is a highly experienced performer, teacher, and coach. He has performed as soloist and collaborative pianist in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Europe, and was on the music staff of Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown, NY, from 1988 to 2011. Since 2012 he has been serving as a Lieder coach for AIMS in Graz, Austria. He was the artistic director of the South Georgia Opera from 1986-1993, and has also served as coach for Florida Grand Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Michigan Opera Theater, Opera Grand Rapids, and the Peter Harrower Summer Opera Workshop. He has been at FSU since 1984, teaching collaborative piano, coaching graduate voice majors, and teaching a variety of language and vocal literature classes for singers and pianists. He has served as adjudicator for vocal, piano, and composition competitions. Hoekman earned the D.M.A. degree in piano performance from the University of Michigan, where he studied piano with Theodore Lettvin and harpsichord with Edward Parmentier. He received his B.A. degree from Calvin College and the M.M. from Peabody Conservatory, where he was a student of Leon Fleisher. Also a composer, Hoekman has works published by Theodore Presser, Recital Publications, Colla Voce, Plymouth Music Company, and Classical Vocal Reprints, and was the 2002 MTNA-Shepherd Distinguished Composer of the Year. He has been commissioned by several organizations, including the Rawlins Piano Trio, the Coastal Carolina Chamber Music Festival, and Georgia Southern University.
has played with many orchestras across the country, including the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Mississippi Symphony, and the West Michigan Symphony. She currently serves as Assistant Concertmaster of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra, and is also a member of the Mobile Symphony Orchestra. She performs chamber music as a violinist in the Purple Martin String Quartet, and is a founding member of the Argot Trio with her husband, Dr. Jonathan Holden. Caroline is a native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, and earned degrees from Hope College in Holland, MI and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She resides in Tallahassee with her husband and two young children. Outside of music, she enjoys gardening and stained glass projects.
holds the D.M.A. in cello performance and the Ph.D. in music theory from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Steven Doane, Pamela Frame, and Alan Harris. He also studied with Antonio Lysy at McGill University and with Pierre Djokic and Shimon Walt at Dalhousie University. On faculty at the FSU College of Music since 2001, he previously served as cello instructor at Colgate University and as Pamela Frame's assistant at Eastman. He also instructed music theory at Eastman and at the University of Rochester, winning two prestigious teaching awards, and received the Florida State University Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2007. He has performed under the auspices of the Banff Centre for the Arts, Baroque SouthEast, the College Music Society, Electronic Music Midwest, Music on the Lake, Musique Royale, the Orford Arts Centre, the Scotia Festival of Music, the Spark Festival, and the Syracuse Society for New Music, as well as on faculty recital programs at FSU. He previously appeared as principal cellist of the Binghamton Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, and the Montreal Chamber Players, and has given the world, North American, and NYC premieres of several new works for solo cello.
Marnie Kim Jones
violoncellist, holds a Bachelors in Music degree and an Artist Diploma from McGill University (studio of Antonio Lysy) and a Masters in Music degree from the Eastman School of Music (studio of Steven Doane). While at Eastman she also studied string pedagogy with Louis Bergonzi and Baroque performance practice with Paul O'Dette and Christel Thielmann. Kim is originally from Calgary, Alberta, where she studied with John Kadz; she has also performed in masterclasses for Anner Bylsma, Bernard Greenhouse, Franz Helmerson, Desmond Hoebig, Steven Isserlis, Laurence Lesser, Siegfried Palm, Aldo Parisot, Fred Sherry, Janos Starker, and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. Previously a tenured member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, she now serves as associate principal cellist with the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra and maintains a large private studio. Kim performs on a Baroque cello made by English violin-maker John Simpson in the 1740s and restored by Andrew Dipper.
Karyl Louwenaar Lueck, in Memoriam (1/11/1940–3/3/2016)
joined the faculty of the Florida State University School of Music in 1972 as an Assistant Professor of Piano. Over time, harpsichord, fortepiano, basso continuo, Baroque Ensemble, and courses in keyboard literature and performance practice were added to her assignment; and during the last six years of her tenure she also served as Coordinator of the Keyboard Area. Since her retirement in 2007, she has continued as an Adjunct Professor at the College of Music. In 1981 The Tallahassee Bach Parley was founded by Karyl and friends Lillian and Clark Pearson; later she founded also the Jurow International Harpsichord Competition under the auspices of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society. She has appeared as soloist and ensemble harpsichordist in Germany, Costa Rica, and in many major cities and institutions of higher education in the United States, especially in the eastern half of the country.
recently returned from her Santa Fe Opera debut as the Marquise in Daughter of the Regiment. Her 2014- 2015 season began with performances of Mrs. Lovett in Virginia Opera's production of Sweeney Todd, and continued with a semi-staged Hansel & Gretel with the Alabama Symphony (Mother/Witch), and her first Alexander Nevsky with the Eugene Symphony. Her opera roles have ranged from Carmen to Lizzie Borden to Nero, with companies such as Houston Grand Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, San Francisco Opera, English National Opera, and the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, Italy. In concert repertoire, she has appeared with the St. Louis Symphony and National Symphony under Leonard Slatkin, the Berlin Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony under Daniel Barenboim, the Cincinnati Symphony and the L.A. Opera Orchestra under James Conlon, and the New World Symphony and Ensemble Orchestral de Paris under John Nelson. A highly regarded interpreter of chamber music and art song, she has performed with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Chamber Music Northwest, OK Mozart, BargeMusic, and for the Prague New Music Festival.
is Associate Professor of Double Bass at Florida State University. As a member of the Juilliard MAP faculty, she coached chamber music and bass ensembles and taught double bass. She is a member of New York's prestigious Orchestra of St. Luke's performing at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center and is principal bassist of the Tallahassee Symphony Orchestra. She has performed with the American Symphony Orchestra, the Opera Orchestra of New York, Joffrey Ballet, New York City Ballet and the American Ballet Theatre. She performs regularly at the Caramoor International Music and has participated in Festival of Two Worlds in Charleston, SC and in Spoleto, Italy. An active chamber musician, she is a member of the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra performing on period instruments.
Born in Cardiff, Wales, Iain Quinn enjoys a distinguished career as an organist, musicologist, and composer. He has studied at The Juilliard School, The Hartt School, University of Hartford, (BM, summa cum laude), the Institute of Sacred Music, Yale University (MM), and the University of Durham (PhD in Historical Musicology), during which time he was also a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University. He has held college, church and cathedral positions in Durham (UK), New York, Connecticut and New Mexico, respectively, and taught at the Blackheath Conservatoire, London, and Western Connecticut State University. He has given performances in London, Cambridge, Oxford, Haarlem, Berlin, Lisbon, Melbourne, Moscow, Washington, DC, New York and Hong Kong. He has also performed at many international festivals. His scholarly writings have been published in Tempo, MLA Notes, Journal of Victorian Culture, Interpreting Historical Keyboard Music (Ashgate), and in editions of Samuel Barber and Carl Czerny published by G. Schirmer and A-R Editions, respectively. He has recorded eleven CDs that are available on the Chandos, Hyperion, and Raven labels. Dr. Quinn is Assistant Professor of Organ at Florida State University.
Nina Scheibe is pursuing her doctoral degree in bassoon performance at Florida State University, where she studies with Jeffrey Keesecker. She is a member of the University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Winds, and has performed with the Tallahassee and Pensacola Symphony Orchestras, Tallahassee Community Chorus, and the Panama City Pops Orchestra. Nina is involved with both the Baroque Ensemble and Collegium Musicum at FSU, where she plays recorder, crumhorn, shawm, and Baroque bassoon. In 2016, she attended the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute in Toronto, where she studied with Dominic Teresi. Other past summer experiences include the Monteux School, Prague Summer Nights, Brevard, and Marrowstone Music Festivals, and the Curtis Summerfest Bassoon Institute. Nina received her master’s from FSU, and her bachelor’s from the University of Kansas, where she studied with Eric Stomberg.
Miriam Tellechea (Barfield)
began studying the violin at age six with Melissa Brewer. She received her Bachelor of Music from Florida State University, where she studied with Dr. Pamela Ryan, and recently completed a Master of Music in Viola Performance at The Boston Conservatory under Patricia McCarty. She was a state winner for the ASTA National Solo Competition in 2010 (Massachusetts) and in 2008 (Florida) and has performed in master classes for Joseph Silverstein, Robert Spano, James Dunham, and Thomas Dumm. She has been a member of many orchestras, including the Tallahassee Symphony, Sinfonia Gulf Coast, the Columbus Symphony, and the Cape Ann Symphony. Miriam has attended the Lucerne Festival Academy in Switzerland, Brevard Music Festival, Schlern International Music Festival in Italy, and the Meadowmount School of Music, where she is a teaching assistant and has performed with violinists Joseph Silverstein and James Ehnes.
